Solidarity
We stand in solidarity with local initiatives. SOLI helps them realise their project ideas and programmes, opening access to resources such as education and training, medical care and ways to earn a living.
The initiatives cover different fields and priorities. Within those fields we develop and carry out programmes and projects together with SOLI.
Aim
Supporting locally initiated ideas and projects in these areas:
- sustainable development
- livelihoods
- schooling and further education
- health
Working together
In project work with self-organised groups and organisations on the ground, our role includes thinking and planning solutions together. The focus, though, is on listening and on organising the means – financial or communicative – for the paths that emerge from that process.
How we work
- The project idea comes from the people on the ground.
- Planning happens together.
- The local initiatives and their community carry out the project, and we accompany them.
- Accounts and the review of results are done together.
- International communication and fundraising are mostly in our hands.
Permaculture
Farming is a fundamental economic activity in East Africa, and it faces serious challenges. We connect with movements such as permaculture in order to offer training that is easy to access.
Development research discusses permaculture as one possible tool for strengthening the social and ecological resilience of a local society in the face of climate change. Its principles can help people and communities withstand conventional agriculture and climatic change – by building self-reliance and the ability to adapt, working with the ecosystem.
SOLI supports the farming project Balandize Kimeze as it engages with permaculture ideas. A permaculture workshop for the group is planned. Another project with a permaculture connection is the ARCOS coffee plantation.
Purpose of the association
The purpose of SOLI Uganda e.V., based in Berlin, is to promote education, health and livelihoods for disadvantaged children, young people and adults in partner countries of the Global South, with a focus on Uganda.
That includes:
- promoting equality between women and men
- development cooperation on equal terms
- promoting upbringing, vocational and higher education, and adult education
How this is put into practice
- Joint programmes with local organisations and initiatives based in Uganda.
- Programmes that open income opportunities for disadvantaged young people and adults (farming, food processing, crafts, health care).
- Education programmes for disadvantaged children: schooling, health care, supervision, housing, nutrition and school equipment.
The association is politically and religiously neutral.
Non-profit status
The association pursues exclusively charitable purposes. It acts selflessly and does not primarily pursue its own economic interests. The association’s funds may be used only for purposes set out in its statutes. No person may benefit from expenditure that is unrelated to the association’s purpose, or from disproportionately high remuneration.
Members do not receive payments from the association’s funds in their capacity as members. When they carry out association duties, they may, within the limits of the budget and on the basis of a written contract with the board, receive appropriate pay or reimbursement of expenses. Contracts for work by board members require a decision of the general meeting.
